Grants are a form of funding that can be used to support research and innovation. Grants fall into two main categories: government and foundation grants. There are also several different types of government and foundation grants, each with its own criteria for receiving funding. In this article, Nihar Gala will discuss how grants work and how you might get your hands on some money for your research project.

What are grants?

Grants are a type of financial aid that may be awarded by a government agency, foundation or corporation. Grants can be used to support research and innovation. Some types of grants include:

  • Scholarships are awards given by universities to students who demonstrate high academic achievement. These scholarships help pay for tuition costs and living expenses while attending college.
  • Fellowships are similar in nature to scholarships but are typically awarded based on merit rather than need-based factors such as family income level or ethnicity (though many fellowships do require applicants’ backgrounds). The main difference between the two terms is that with a fellowship you do not have any obligation to repay–it’s simply an award given out at no cost!

How do I find a grant?

Writing the application can be a challenge, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. The Foundation has been helping scientists and engineers apply for grants since its inception in 1954.
